Matt's company slogan "We Work With the Earth" indicates his dedication to working with the land in an earth friendly way and doing no harm to wildlife or natural /native plants. And special attention to detail "like the natural curves and valleys of the land" is greatly appreciated by Matt's clients.

Doing what is best for the earth also extends to offering environmentally friendly materials to commercial and residential clients.

By The Yard carries hardwood and mixed bark mulches that include natural cedar, hardwood, hemlock and aged hardwood. We also carry colored hardwood mulches including red and dark chocolate. And what he doesn't carry he can order, including speciality colored products: gold, black, light brown and more. All mulches offered by By The Yard contain both small and larger pieces that cover and hold together nicely to prevent weed growth.

If you're wondering how the son of bakery owners came to found a landscape business, it was the chance opportunity to work for a well-known local excavator that changed the direction of Matt's life.

Todd Froelich, owner of Froelich Concrete (one of THE best known and respected excavators in our community) offered Matt a job in 1995. The decision to work for Todd Froelich proved to be a transformative experience. The job gave Matt the chance to develop an expertise in grading land, working with forms (Matt was considered a concrete finisher). 90% of the work he did was complete stamped concrete for patio and driveway construction and more. The skills he developed at Froelich informed Matt's expertise and he felt himself gravitating towards the landscaping SECTOR of the construction business.

Today Matt continues to search out and offer products that will enhance, not overwhelm, the natural beauty of a client's landscape. His ability to offer a customized experience for each situation keeps customers coming back. By The Yard offers decorative stone, granite, fieldstone, gravel, mulch, top soil and sand.

In addition, Matt also offers all of his stone, gravel and mulch products to contractors.
